One afternoon, we were providing security for a high-ranking official at the Iraqi Ministry of Defense. It was around 1:00 p.m., and the temperature was pushing 130–135°F. The team huddled in the small patch of shade beside our Humvees, trying to escape the relentless heat. Suddenly, we saw a small poof of sand about 30 yards away. A bird had literally fallen out of the sky from the heat. Looking at it, I joked, “It’s so damn hot, even the birds are surrendering.” The bird was alive but panting heavily, so we gave it some water. About 30 minutes later, it recovered and flew away. As unbelievable as it sounds, it remains one of the craziest things we witnessed during our time in Iraq.
