The last words I heard before the anesthesia took over were the surgeon saying, “We’re going to have to amputate.” When I woke up after surgery in the Green Zone, the first thing I did was look down at my legs and feet. Seeing they were still there, I smiled at one of my teammates and said, “Dude, I still have my legs.” He looked back at me and replied, “Yeah… but look at your hand.” That’s when I realized my index finger was gone. Even in that moment, humor was how we coped. It didn’t erase what had happened, but it made it a little easier to accept.
