A group of soldiers was debating why we were in Iraq. Some argued we had no business being there and questioned the purpose of the mission. After listening for a while, I finally said, “Soldiers don’t start wars—we’re just active participants.” It wasn’t meant to dismiss the conversation, only to remind everyone that our job wasn’t to decide the politics. Our job was to carry out the mission and look out for the soldier standing next to us.
