After spending more than 10 hours on the road running convoy missions, my team finally made it back to the FOB, exhausted and covered in dust. No sooner had we parked than I was told my soldiers were supposed to plant flowers around our sleeping quarters to “improve morale.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Without missing a beat, I replied, “My team isn’t planting any f*cking flowers!" After everything we’d faced that day, flowers were the last thing on anyone’s mind. The only morale my soldiers needed was a hot meal, a shower, and a few hours of sleep.
